The Architectural Inspiration Behind Cruise 18

Early this year, as we were working late drawing up a new collection, we had a thought that we couldn't get out of our heads: Where is Flagpole the most at home? Is there a spot on this blue marble that feels like Flagpole's natural state? Does this place exist? Is it even one single place?

With our head full of questions, we hit the books (ok, you got us, Google) in search of a place that reflected the virtues of Flagpole as well as our contemporary architectural eye. We searched and searched and searched.... then we found it, in Spain. It was perfect: colorful, architectural, exotic, and strikingly beautiful.

"I came across this image and thought, 'this place would be perfect. It cannot be real.' I presented it to my team with no second option. I knew it was a long shot but that we would have a swimwear shoot like no other if we were able to pull it off."

La Muralla Roja, Spanish for 'The Red Wall,' is located within the La Manzanera development in Spain's Calpe Region, designed in 1968 by architect Ricardo Bofill. La Muralla Roja is often described as a labyrinth, with walls and corridors that evoke the whimsy of Dr. Seuss and the magic of M.C. Escher.

The most striking thing about this architectural gem rising out of the coastal cliffs is the color. The walls are an incredible palette of coastal tones designed to lay in contrast to the surrounding environment, and in harmony with it at the same time. We couldn't help but be inspired by a place like this.

"Shooting here was actually pretty difficult. There are stairs and passages shooting off in every direction and we were constantly getting lost. It was like an M.C. Escher work come to life."

After an experience like the one we had shooting among the walls, colors, and lines, of Ricardo Bofill's imagination, we were reminded of the question that spurred our journey here in the first place: Is there one place that Flagpole feels naturally at home? The answer is a loud and emphatic "no, there are many."

Our mission is to create the most incredible swim and resort wear pieces you've ever owned, built to travel, move, and help you live the active life. We want to continue to explore ALL the spaces and places that Flagpole feels at home. La Muralla Roja is only the beginning.
